How To Get Crayon Out Of Your Carpet

When it comes to crayon stains on your carpet there’s no need to panic as there are several solutions that can help clean up and restore your floor covering to an unspoiled condition. Take a look at some of the best cleaning techniques for how to get crayons out of your carpet here…

Things you’ll need

Whatever method of carpet cleaning you decide on to remove the crayon stains there are a few basic tools to gather together:

  • – Washing up liquid
  • – Ice cubes
  • – Plastic bag
  • – Flat knife
  • – Iron
  • – Clean cloths
  • – Carpet cleaner
  • – Vacuum

Using a simple washing up liquid mix

Before you begin cleaning carefully scrape away any excess hard crayon with a flat knife. If the crayon is soft and not easily scraped then pop an ice cube into a plastic bag and hold it onto the stain which will cause it to harden.
Then you can get rid of the scraped-away pieces by vacuuming before mixing a ¼ teaspoon of mild washing-up liquid with a cup of warm water. Apply the solution to a small spot and let it sit for around a minute, then use a clean wet cloth to lightly sponge the area.
If there are no signs of discoloration then it’s safe to apply more solution to the stain and let it sit for about five minutes. When you see that it’s set you can start blotting with a clean dry cloth until the stain has gone. Remember not to rub the stain as this only results in pushing the colour deeper into the carpet fibers.

The iron method

With this technique, you need to bear in mind that some carpet fibres may melt when coming into contact with the heat. You need to gently test an area of the carpet on a low heat setting before you begin.
Keep the iron on the low heat setting as you place a clean white cloth over the crayon stain, and then gently press the pointed end of the iron into the stain itself which causes the crayon to transfer away from the fibres and onto the cloth.
As the cloth becomes saturated with wax turn the cloth to a clean area, or simply use another clean cloth. Finish off by blotting the area with a clean cloth soaked in warm water and washing up liquid solution, then rinse with cold water and blot dry. Don’t saturate the carpet as this can learn to mold and mildew issues if the carpet doesn’t dry completely.

Commercial carpet cleaner

This method involves buying a recommended carpet cleaner that will keep your carpet warranty valid, meaning it’s been certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute. You’ll still need to remove any excess crayon from your carpet with the dull knife and vacuum away the scraped-off pieces.
Read the instructions and do a small patch test before you start, then liberally spray the cleaner onto the stained area. Once set, you’ll be able to blot with a clean, dry cloth until the stain has gone. Bear in mind this can take several attempts! You may need to finally rinse with clean water before blotting dry.
