Bad Cleaning Habits

bad cleaning habits

Recent research has shown that bad cleaning habits are the main cause for the spread of bacteria around the home – ineffective cleaning materials used in the wrong order actually do more harm than good. The study also proved that if you live in a house with a high count of bacteria you’re more likely to contract skin infections, and struggle with asthma. So, how do you clean effectively? Read on…

clean cloths1. Use clean cloths

Using the same cloth for more than one specific area is the common way to spread bacteria – you can quickly transfer germs from kitchen surfaces to door handles and not even be aware of it. Take a different clean cloth for each job – or use individual disinfectant wipes and dispose of them after each section of the room has been wiped down.

2. Utilise a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are particularly good at reducing mould growth in kitchen and bathrooms – damp surroundings can cause fungus and bacterial build-up – which can lead to respiratory problems. They’re generally electrical and can reduce and maintain the level of humidity in the air – eliminating musty odours, and preventing the growth of mildew – making a much healthier environment.

3. Steam clean

An effective way to kill bacteria which could be growing on surfaces which are used for food preparing is to invest in a steam cleaner. Steam cleaning hardwood floors can remove dirt and discourage sources for bacteria – cleaning, drying, and sanitising the surfaces based primarily on heat.

4. Dry towels

When you leave wet towels and even the shower curtain scrunched up you’re inviting mildew growth. After each shower close the shower curtain to allow it to dry – hang the wet towels up to dry so they’re all ready for the next use. One of the main causes of smelly towels is the absorption of body soil and bacteria – you need to wash them in a hot cycle and make sure they’re properly dry before folding and storing.

5. Don’t spread germs

It’s so easy top spread germs from the toilet to the basin and other surfaces – make the toilet the last item you clean in the bathroom. Use recommended bathroom sanitising wipes – disposing of them as they become less moist. You can use a clean cloth and disinfectant water for the bath or shower which have larger surface areas. Use a toilet brush to get under the rim and finish with a toilet cleaner recommended to kill 99% bacteria.

6. Wash the dishes

Leaving dirty dishes in the sink is inviting bacteria – and they attract hungry insects which continue to spread germs. Either put the dishes into the dishwasher, or hand wash them straight away. The sink can harbour E.coli and other types of coliform bacteria so it needs to be disinfected at least once a day. Sponges, dishcloths, and tea towels need to be washed on a hot cycle to kill bacteria.

7. Take off shoes

Removing your shoes every time you come into the house will prevent outside dirt and germs coming inside. Getting into this routine will keep your carpets cleaner for longer – pop wet or muddy footwear into a tray close by the entrance.

8. Clean your carpets

Carpets can last for many years if you clean and maintain them properly. Vacuuming on a weekly basis ensures that dirt and grime doesn’t build up – if you don’t do this the carpet fibres will deteriorate and it’ll be tough for your cleaner to penetrate into the fabric.

Walking barefoot can cause humidity which in turn encourages microorganisms to flourish. Foot lotions and creams make for a damp environment – wear slippers to avoid dents and fibre damage.
